Poem Feature: "God's Cat" (and a Plea to Adopt Him)
How a prayer brought a cat into my family's life.
Prayers and poems can have immense power in their words.
My sister-in-law was walking through New York City when she realized a cat was following her. With paper and gum stapled to its paw, it was hurting and looking for a friend. So my sister-in-law kept her pace and said a prayer, saying that if God wanted her to take care of this cat, it would keep following her and it would be a sign.
The cat did follow her all the way to her studio apartment two city blocks away.
When I heard this story, my reaction eventually became, “Well, of course God has a cat.” And I wrote the poem below:
I’ve written many cat poems and celebrated others’ feline and furry friend rhymes. This one is one of the most dear to my heart I have written. Obviously, the beautiful and unconditional love of a pet is an easy metaphor for God’s love, but rarely are the parables so tangible and signs so obvious that a feline can nearly trick us too into such open-hearted love and compassion.
It is also dear to my heart because this cat needs a new home. My sister-in-law does not have the ability to take care of this cat in part because she is already the proud owner of a rescue dog, and I cannot take this cat in because my wife is allergic. So I am asking, through the oft-misused power of social media:
Does anyone want to take in God’s cat?
